Q: What are the main differences between the PaperSchmidt and classical rebound hammers?
A: The PaperSchmidt is not a concrete test hammer. It has a high compliance plunger which provides accuracy and repeatability far exceeding that of classical rebound hammers. The durability of the device has been improved significantly. The user interface has functionality,such as a direct display of the roll profile that is specific to the roll hardness testing application. It is also independent of the direction of impact, so this must no longer be compensated as is the case with traditional hammers.
Q: Does the PaperSchmidt measure the same R-values as a traditional hammer?
A: The PaperSchmidt has a new measurement principle and depending on the type of paper under test, the R-values can differ from those obtained with an Original Schmidt Type L hammer. It is generally recommended to perform a check against a reference instrument.
Q: How many impacts can I perform with a PaperSchmidt between service intervals?
A: Mechanized durability tests carried out on the PaperSchmidt have shown that it can typically perform around 100’000 impacts between service intervals. You should periodically inspect your instrument as well as do an impact test on your anvil to ensure it is performing correctly.
Q: Can I use the PaperSchmidt on film rolls?
A: PaperSchmidt has been used successfully on film rolls, but on softer types of film the impact energy may leave an impression on the roll. In cases of uncertainty, it is best to make a trial. Please ask for a free demonstration.
Q: How many measurement series can I store on the PaperSchmidt?
A: This is dependent on the number of impacts in a series. E.g - 428 series with 10 values per series, 257 series with 20 values per series.
Q: Does the PaperSchmidt give a warning when the memory is full?
A: No. The memory is overwritten when it is full, so it is recommended to make regular downloads to a PC to backup the stored data.
Q: How many impacts can I make on a single battery charge and how long does it take to recharge the battery?
A: Typically you can perform more than 5’000 impacts on a single charge. It takes approximately 90 minutes to recharge. A warning is shown on the display when the battery is running low.
Q: Can I enter the roll name on the PaperSchmidt itself or must I download it from a PC?
A: You can enter the roll names (max. 12 characters) directly on the PaperSchmidt.
Q: How many impacts can I perform in a single series?
A: A single series can contain up to 99 impacts. Based on the TAPPI standard recommendations, this is sufficient for a roll about 15m (49 ft) wide.
Q: Does PaperSchmidt conform to any standards?
A: PaperSchmidt conforms to the TAPPI T834 om-7 standard and the TAPPI TIP 1004-01 standard.
Q: Is it possible to print out a measurement series?
A: It is possible to print out measurement series via a PC using the Paperlink software.
Q: Can I use the Proceq anvil I already own to check a PaperSchmidt, and what reading am I to expect?
A: Yes you can. You should take a reference measurement series before you begin using the PaperSchmidt and record the value, then check against this value in future. For Proceq anvils, the values are defined in the manuals. To use traditional Proceq anvils, you will need to purchase a SilverSchmit / PaperSchmidt adaptor.
Q: What is the warranty and exactly what is covered?
A: The mechanical parts are guaranteed for 6 months and the electronic parts are guaranteed for 2 years.
Q: I have in-house technicians who have repaired and calibrated hammers in the past. Can we service the PaperSchmidt ourselves or must it be returned for service after the warranty period has expired?
A: You can service the PaperSchmidt yourselves. All necessary spare parts are available from your Proceq service center.
